Press Council of Ireland

The reformation of Ireland’s out-dated libel laws was a long-term lobbying project with which Cullen Communications engaged over a period of almost 20 years. By engaging the Irish Government in an ongoing dialogue about libel/defamation, we were able to bring the issue into the public domain and let everybody see the need for law reform. We mobilised all press industry stakeholders to support the establishment of an independent Press Council and Press Ombudsman, maintaining pressure on key Government figures until the new Defamation Bill was enacted and Ireland’s first ever Press Council was launched.

The Press Council of Ireland has since been held up (notably by the Leveson Inquiry) as an example of efficient, accessible and fair press regulation, while agency founder Frank Cullen was described by The Irish Times as “the constant champion” of libel law reform for the part he played.
