‘Press Pass’ earns PRCA nod for Cullen Communications

A newspapers-in-education project by Cullen Communications on behalf of National Newspapers of Ireland (NNI) has been shortlisted in the 2013 PRCA Awards for Excellence.

NNI ‘Press Pass’ was launched last year as part of a newspaper industry initiative to get more students reading newspapers as a way of improving their literary skills.

A total of 255 schools signed up for the inaugural NNI Press Pass – more than half of all eligible schools in Ireland – with more than 14,500 Transition Year students taking part in the initiative.

A national writing competition, which formed part of the programme, attracted 860 entries with Taoiseach Enda Kenny presenting the winning students with their awards at a ceremony in March.

The Taoiseach described NNI Press Pass as a very commendable initiative from NNI which can help to promote literacy as well as helping students to develop analytical skills and stimulating social awareness”.

NNI Press Pass took place with the official support of the Department of Education, and the initiative is set to be piloted as a short course for the new Junior Cycle in September 2013. It is also continuing in its current form for Transition Year classes.

The project has been shortlisted in the Corporate Communications category of the 2013 PRCA Awards for Excellence – the winners will be announced on 21 June.

Cullen Communications won a PRCA award for its handling of the closure of the Semperit plant in Dublin, and has received numerous nominations for the prestigious industry awards.
